MacKeeper is a very useful anti-virus program with many useful features. It lacks some key features. It doesn’t offer anti-phishing protection. It doesn’t offer parental controls or firewalls, which are Intego features.

MacKeeper isn’t the most expensive on the market. It’s not the most expensive product on the market, but it’s an excellent choice for those who want an easy and effective antivirus program that will work well with their Mac.

MacKeeper Antivirus Full Review

MacKeeper is a Mac-only security suite that’s the best in 2022.

This is a powerful, instant antivirus and malware protection tool. It also offers a variety of security and optimization features, such as ID theft protection and adware monitoring.

MacKeeper is more expensive than most of its competitors, but it offers flexible pricing plans. All plans come with a 14-day money back guarantee.

MacKeeper Antivirus Security features

Antivirus Scanner

There is no quick scan option. You can however use a customized scan for specific files. It took just 50 minutes. It took only 50 minutes.

A folder with Mac malware samples was also downloaded as part of my testing. This contained viruses, spyware, and malicious software.

The prompt will ask me whether to delete or quarantine the files. This helpful feature displays a list of potentially dangerous files and lets you choose to mark them safe or delete.

It became clear that scan times were not getting faster after running multiple scans. MacKeeper does not use file cache to skip files that have been scanned, reducing subsequent scan speeds. They didn’t slow down either.

Real-time protection will be enabled the first time the anti-virus scanner is run. Real-time protection is easy to activate and can even be disabled manually.

MacKeeper’s antivirus scanner is constantly running in the background scanning for malware every time you attempt to download it. After being alerted, I was asked to put the files in quarantine so I could delete them.

MacKeeper’s antivirus scanner impressed me. I would like to know how many files were scanned every time. It is also disappointing that the scanner doesn’t use file caching like Intego to speed-up future scans.

Adware Cleaner

Adware Cleaner detects, removes, and monitors your Mac for new adware. Although a majority of antivirus products include adware cleaners they are often integrated into the main antimalware engine. Avira and TotalAV are two of the top antivirus products. Their anti-malware tools are among the best in the business.

The Adware Cleaner took just 5 minutes to scan my Mac. Some of these adware viruses had been around for many years. It was easy to delete the adware files from my computer after the scan was completed.

Adware Cleaner didn’t enable real-time surveillance by default. Click this link to open a pop-up that will allow instant protection.

Adware cleaner is a great program. I know that Adware cleaner is free of malicious adware and PUAs (potentially undesirable applications) that spam my computer with irrelevant ads.

ID Theft Guard

ID theft Guardian is a powerful tool to protect you against identity theft.

This is what makes MacKeeper unique. Bitdefender, TotalAV, and TotalAV do not offer dark-web surveillance. MacKeeper’s ID Theft Guard has more features than other products.

When you first use your device, ID Theft guard will identify all email addresses. You may also add additional email addresses to be scanned.

ID Theft Guard found 8 email addresses on my Mac. Even though many of the addresses were not in use, ID Theft Guard identified 8 email addresses with my Mac. A pop-up alerted me to 5 data breaches involving an email address 5 minutes later.

I was impressed with this feature, despite the 5-minute delay.

ID Theft Guard asked that I verify who my identity is using a security code sent to my email.

The exact details of each breach were then given to me. This included information such as the name of the breached company and details about the breach. I was also able to view the password I used.

MacKeeper provides a link to take you directly the website where your password can be changed. You can also manually change your password. After you’ve done that, click Resolution to ensure it doesn’t show up in MacKeeper as a security issue.

My case involved the breached company “Sensitive”. MacKeeper stated that this was due to legal reasons. It would be risky to reveal the source of the breach. However, you can still view the password and, if it is familiar, it may be possible to modify it manually.

I believe ID Theft Guard is a fantastic feature. MacKeeper protected a lot my personal information, which made me feel a lot more relaxed.

VPN Private Connect

Private Connect is MacKeeper’s integrated VPN. Even those with limitations can be very inconvenient.

Privacy Connect works in the same way as all VPNs. It hides your IP address, encrypts sensitive data and protects against hackers.

Many VPNs that come with antivirus products are not reliable. MacKeeper VPN has the following features.

• Unlimited Data.
• Military grade AES encryption of at least 256 bits.
• DNS leak prevention, webRTC.
• Larger server networks: 300+ locations across 50+ countries.
• Some servers support P2PTorrenting.

TotalAV is the only VPN that I have with antivirus. TotalAV is my only antivirus-bundled VPN.

My tests were very positive about MacKeeper VPN’s speed. The download speed for the “Best Available” server was around 20%. This speed is comparable to standalone brands such as ExpressVPN and ProtonVPN.

Although upload speeds dropped slightly when I connected via a USA server (I am in Spain), they were still very quick.

My connection speeds to Australia’s servers were slower than mine, but web pages loaded in seconds or less and I was able to stream a movie online with no buffering. The video quality was not as good as I expected.

MacKeeper’s VPN allows you to access streaming sites without any problems. Avira VPN is not compatible with Netflix. Mullvad VPN and other standalone VPNs are not good options for streaming.

The only thing that worries me about MacKeeper VPN security is the fact that I was unable to discover how they manage user data.

The VPN is also third-party making it less secure.

Just like other MacKeeper features You have two options to turn the VPN on or off. Or you can choose to have it connect automatically whenever your Mac starts.

While there’s not much transparency about the no logs policy I was impressed with MacKeeper VPN. This add-on is a great choice for anyone who wants to protect their computer.

StopAd

StopAd stops advertisements, as its name implies. It prevents trackers and ads from following your online activity.

MacKeeper also has this extra feature. Bitdefender and McAfee (Intego), don’t.

MacKeeper’s browser extension is the ad-blocker. It must be enabled for Safari and Google Chrome. MacKeeper will open the page immediately where you can install browser extensions with just one click.

Once you have opened a new page, the browser extension can be activated. The browser extension will automatically start in the background when it becomes active. To view more details about StopAD’s blocking, click the icon in your menu.

YouTube was the first to test this feature. YouTube tested this feature.

I like the StopAd extension. It’s simple to use and has a clean design.

Safe Cleaning

Safe Cleanup inspects your entire Mac for “junk” files.

Most antivirus programs can safely delete junk files. MacKeeper is unique in that it includes attachments.

It is difficult for me to use this feature as there is no prompt to ask you to examine these files before clicking Clean. Then, you can choose which files you don’t like and click Clean Junk Files.

Trash is the only category that will warn you before you delete any files. Clean

Apple Mail is my preferred email management app. If I hadn’t hit the button, I could have lost all of my mail attachments in my folders.

Safe Cleaning is a great tool to delete unnecessary files and attachments from your hard drive.

Duplicate Finder

Duplicates Locator scans the computer for duplicate files, images and screenshots.

It took just two minutes to scan all files. 504 files took up 445 MB of space. Before deleting files, it prompts you to review all files. Duplicate files will be deleted by default. You can drill down to the file details and see their names and locations by clicking on each category.

Manual effort is required to use Duplicates Finder. You’ll need to go through all files, then click on Remove Selected.

This feature is fantastic. It’s well-designed with clear instructions.

Smart Uninstaller

Smart uninstaller scans your Mac for unwanted applications, widgets, or plugins.

Sometimes, it can be difficult to remove apps from macOS devices. They can be moved to your trash, but not all. Smart Uninstaller will only remove certain components.

This feature is not usually found in performance optimizers that come with antivirus products. This is a great addition to MacKeeper. TotalAV doesn’t include an uninstaller. McAfee and Intego have it.

It took less than 2 minutes to scan the computer. The scan revealed that there was 24 GB worth of unopened plugins, browser extensions, apps, and plugins.

Apps can be sorted automatically according to their use. This makes it easy to delete apps.

Although this feature is extremely useful, the How to Use Smart Uninstaller guide from MacKeeper clearly states that you should not remove macOS default apps such as Quick Look or Spotlight. You might think it’s an alert to let you know if you wish to delete them. It was not something I wanted to see. You can click Remove Selected to ensure that no important information is accidentally deleted.

Smart uninstaller is an excellent feature. However, I would like more information about which applications are safe to delete or what to remove.

Memory Cleaner

Memory Clearer lets you view how RAM (random access memory on your Mac) has been used. To improve your overall performance, you can free up RAM.

It used up 7.9GB of my 8GB RAM, and only 22.7MB of my available memory, when I tested it.

You will find the details about how memory is being used in the Memory Usage section. To clear the memory, hit Cleaning Memory. This will remove approximately 3GB of it. Within minutes, the available memory had returned to its initial levels. This was a bad idea.

View a complete list all apps using the most RAM on the Apps and Processes screen. This prevents you from accidentally closing an app that is extremely important to your computer.

It was confusing to see that many greyed out processes and apps can remain open, even though they could be very important. This is in addition to MacKeeper’s warning about closing certain processes. The How To Use Memory Cleanerblog makes this clear, but it is not in the app. I would love to see more information within the app interface about what users should be looking out for.

MacKeeper used the most RAM.

Memory Cleaner is not appealing to me. In the unlikely event that it might cause damage to my Mac, I didn’t want most processes to be closed. But, I was able to restore my RAM to the state it was before cleaning it.

Additional Features

MacKeeper includes both Login Items, Find & Fix and Update Tracker.

• Update Tracker

Update Tracker scans your device for any applications that may need to be updated and determines whether they do.

Update Tracker identified 5 apps on my device that required updating. I also checked the App Store and discovered that MacKeeper couldn’t detect my Spotify app as being outdated.

• Login Items

Login items can speed up your Mac’s startup times by reviewing all the apps you loaded when it started. Intego does not provide a manager for start ups so MacKeeper is a welcome addition.

The Login Items scan found 18 items that launch when I start my Mac. Seven of them were from MacKeeper. Ironically, the app that was created to speed up my Mac’s performance is the fastest.

I decided to delete three of the suggested login details (some are mandatory but can’t be being removed). If you have trouble starting your Mac, these Login items will help.

• Find & Fix

MacKeeper offers a Find &Fix function that allows you to quickly scan and analyze all MacKeeper features.

This scan shows all the MacKeeper categories and highlights any threats.

• Security.
• Cleaning.
• Privacy.
• Performance.

This Find & Fix scan is quick and easy. So you can quickly identify the most important areas.

You have two options on the main screen displaying Find & Fix scan result: you can click View for a detailed view of each section and then make any edits you desire. You can also click Fix Items Securely to allow MacKeeper to automatically “fix” any items found.

The Find & Fix feature is a great tool to quickly assess your device’s security, optimization status, and make any necessary repairs. The button isn’t appealing to me. You click it, and all changes are applied immediately without you being able to see them.

MacKeeper could have more useful features. Intego offers anti-phishing protection and parental controls. These features are more valuable to me than MacKeeper. They are also features that are standard in Norton, McAfee and TotalAV.

The other features of MacKeeper are fantastic. They were not detrimental to my Mac’s security or performance.

MacKeeper Plans & Prices

MacKeeper offers three pricing options. For 1 device, there are both 1-month and 12-month plans. There are two 12-month plans available for 3 devices.

The standard plans have the same features – the 12-month plans do not have any missing features. These features are also available at an additional cost or as part of a higher-rate plan.

MacKeeper is expensive, but it works well. You can still find comparable products for a cheaper price that perform as well or better.

All standard plans come with a 14-day guarantee. This guarantee is less than that offered by McAfee and TotalAV, which are industry-standard 30 days. However, the features are limited and MacKeeper will continually ask you to subscribe to address any issues.

MacKeeper also offers premium tech support services. These prices can be obtained on request. However, the initial price I was offered was $500 per year. This gave me all the information that I needed.

MacKeeper is a good value for the price. Intego, however, is Mac-dedicated and comes at a similar price. It also has security features that MacKeeper does not have, such as anti-phishing and firewalls. They also offer more features. MacKeeper is still a good option if you are looking for simplicity and functionality.

MacKeeper is easy to use and set up

MacKeeper is easy to set up. The download and installation of MacKeeper software took less than 2 minutes.

If the software has been downloaded, you will need to sign up via the app. To subscribe to the website, first download the program and then enter the activation code that will be sent to your email.

Once activated, all features are immediately accessible. You will be prompted to do so on the appropriate screens. It takes only a few clicks.

MacKeeper’s interface is very intuitive. It’s easy to use, fills the entire screen, and can be minimized when not in use.

Every feature is very easy to use

The only thing I have to criticize about the interface is the lack of explanations for certain functions. This interface is perfect for beginners.

MacKeeper did a great job designing an intuitive package that is easy to use. It makes it easy to manage your Mac’s security and optimization.

MacKeeper Mobile App

MacKeeper is only compatible with macOS. TotalAV, Bitdefender and TotalAV are good choices if you want an antivirus program that will work on all your devices.

MacKeeper provides many customer support options.

MacKeeper used to be able provide phone support. A livechat agent informed me that all their incoming calls were cut off due to the pandemic. They assured me, however, that their online customer service was unaffected by the pandemic.

Chat Live

The live chat is located on the right-hand sidebar. It can be found on the right-hand side of the app interface.

I tried live chat twice from the app and the website. They responded quickly and were friendly and were able to answer most of my questions.

Pre-written messages were sometimes placed in my chat conversations on a few occasions. These messages were meant to convince me to upgrade to premium service, or extend my subscription while I tried to cancel.

MacKeeper offers its software in almost 20 languages. They only provide chat support in English.
