ExpressVPN provides the following security features:

Split-tunneling worked flawlessly every time I tried it. Split-tunneling worked flawlessly when I downloaded torrents, made VoIP phone calls, and accessed websites that were blocked in my area. I was able to surf the internet locally and make VoIP calls.

Split-tunneling using ExpressVPN worked for me. It worked well on my Samsung Galaxy, Windows PC and MacBook Pro. ProtonVPN and other competitors, however, allow you to exclude web browsers and apps.

ExpressVPN Speed & Performance

I ran dozens of speed tests with ExpressVPN servers connected to my VPN. I found that the speed was fastest when I used a local VPN server from Romania. However, it was also very fast when using remote servers in the USA or Australia.

I started my speed tests without connecting to ExpressVPN in order to get a baseline speed.

Next, I used ExpressVPN’s Smart location feature (I was connected with a server in Romania) to connect to the fastest VPN server. I experienced no speed drops, and I was able to surf the internet and view content without any delays.

Next, I connected with a US server. Although the distance between me and the server was 4,786 miles (7.703km), it did not surprise me that I received a slower download speed. My online experience was not affected by the slowdown. Netflix TV and movies loaded quickly. Online games loaded with no lag. Websites took 2-3 seconds to load.

Finally, I tried an Australian server. Surprisingly, the Australian server was quicker than the US server when it came to upload and download speeds. The streaming speed of HD content was slower than that on the US server, even though I could stream it. Sometimes it would default to SD quality for 4-5 seconds before switching over to HD. YouTube loaded my 1080p videos immediately, while 4K videos took only a few seconds. Also, a torrent file of 70GB was downloaded in under 2 hours. This is a very fast download.

I ran speed tests using both OpenVPN (and Lightway) to determine which protocol provides the fastest speeds. I also tested Lightway on an Australian and Romanian server. OpenVPN speeds on the Romanian servers were 53% slower than when I used Lightway. OpenVPN speeds were 75% slower on the Australian server.But, Romania’s internet speeds are so fast that it’s unfair for me to compare my results to those of others. I asked my American colleague to speed test my internet speed.

However, I recommend that you use the default protocol ExpressVPN uses in order to get the fastest possible connection speeds and maximum security.Another feature I love is Shortcuts. This feature allows you to create 1-click shortcuts to your favorite apps (like Netflix or Facebook) right after you connect to ExpressVPN. They will automatically appear on your screen and you don’t have to search for them on your phone.

ExpressVPN’s Android app doesn’t support the Network Lock. You can activate “Block Internet if you are unable to connect or reconnect to VPN”, but this is not a major issue for Android users. ExpressVPN’s servers are very fast, so privacy-conscious users will not need Tor.

ExpressVPN was installed on my MacBook Pro, Windows 10 PC and Windows 10.

ExpressVPN makes it simple to keep the default settings. You don’t have to manually enable or disable them.
