CyberGhost VPN has many great features that I love. CyberGhost VPN won’t work in Iran and China due to their strict internet restrictions. CyberGhost VPN’s advertisement blocker also needs improvement. It was unable to block ads from many websites during my testing.

CyberGhost VPN Features

The CyberGhost VPN provides all the security features I would expect from a premium VPN.

• AES encryption 256 bits — also known as “military-grade” encryption
• Kill Switch – This disables the VPN connection.
• Does not log browsing or connection data

CyberGhost allows you to connect to as many as seven devices simultaneously. This is more than rivals TunnelBear or ExpressVPN, which only allow five devices. Private Internet Access (10 devices), ProtonVPN (10 or VyprVPN 30) or IPVanish (10 simultaneous connection options are available if you have more than seven devices.

CyberGhost VPN supports OpenVPN, IKEv2 and WireGuard VPN protocols. These protocols may not work with certain apps. OpenVPN, IKEv2 and Tunnelblick are not available on Android. Tunnelblick, a third-party app that allows you add OpenVPN macOS. This can be confusing for non-technical users.

CyberGhost VPN offers built-in protection against DNS and WebRTC leaks. CyberGhost doesn’t support IPv6. This means that traffic using this protocol is vulnerable to leaks.

Split-tunneling

App Split tunnelling is available in CyberGhost VPN’s Android version. This feature allows users to select which apps will go through the VPN, and which will be sent through your network. I tested it by removing my mobile banking app and routing all the other apps through it. It worked exactly as I expected. The split tunnelling feature of CyberGhost was flawless. It worked with both VPN-connected and regular internet apps.

CyberGhost VPN’s Android Split Tunnelling is very similar with ExpressVPN. It also allows you to exclude apps. ProtonVPN’s split-tuning tool is my favorite. You can exclude IP addresses and apps. It also allows you to obtain the IP address for any website, which will allow you to exclude them from your VPN tunnel.

CyberGhost VPN doesn’t offer split tunnelling. However, CyberGhost VPN’s Smart Rules section contains an Exceptions tool which allows you to choose which websites you don’t want to route through the VPN. I tested this feature. I tested this feature by removing Netflix from my test network. This resulted in a faster connection speed when streaming Netflix content.

Split tunneling is a feature of CyberGhost VPN that allows you to route specific apps through your local network. CyberGhost VPN should have a full-featured split tunneling tool that works with Windows, instead of just the exceptions function.

Smart Rules

CyberGhost’s Smart Rules feature is available only on Mac and Windows. It allows you to customize your VPN preferences. CyberGhost settings can be easily changed. To activate or disable a function, you simply need to toggle a button. There are four types of Smart Rules. Each offers different options to set up privacy or security functions.

• CyberGhost Launch Guidelines. CyberGhost allows you to choose to open an application (e.g. You can choose to open an app (e.g., email or social media) after connecting to CyberGhost.
• Wi-Fi protection. CyberGhost VPN allows you to choose whether the VPN connection is launched when you connect to a Wi-Fi network that is either secured, unsecure or saved.
• Excclusions. To make exceptions you will need OpenVPN.
• App rules. CyberGhost can be set up to automatically connect to a server when you open an application.

Although there are many VPNs which allow you to disable/enable specific functions manually, CyberGhost’s Smart Rules offer the most control.

NoSpy Servers

CyberGhost’s NoSpy servers provide more security and speed that CyberGhost’s regular server.

CyberGhost claims that NoSpy servers have premium hardware and a dedicated link. They are faster than other servers because of this. The NoSpy servers have a large bandwidth which is great for large file uploads or downloads.

CyberGhost VPN headquarters is located in Romania and houses NoSpy server. CyberGhost designed the servers, and CyberGhost employees manage them. They are therefore less susceptible to attacks than remote servers.

NoSpy servers from CyberGhost VPN provide additional security and speed optimization. CyberGhost VPN NoSpy servers were faster than the ones I used to connect via CyberGhost torrenting and streaming servers.

The NoSpy Servers of CyberGhost VPN are an added bonus to the yearly payment plans.

My ID Guard

CyberGhost’s My ID Guard warns you if your email address or passwords have been leaked to dark web. This allows you to change your compromised credentials and protect your online accounts. To help you make stronger passwords, you can use the basic password generator. CyberGhost’s dark Web monitoring is a great feature, but there are better ways to protect your passwords online. Dashlane includes a password security dashboard, live dark web monitoring (with Dashlane agents watching dark web in real time), and many other features that will ensure your passwords and online accounts are as secure as possible.

MyID Guard is a great option for those who don’t need a password manager and are more comfortable with simple dark-web monitoring. You can see if any of your passwords or emails have been compromised.

Content Blocker

CyberGhost VPN’s Content Blocker is intended to block malicious and phishing sites as well as online advertisements.

CyberGhost on the other hand alerted me to malicious websites that Chrome didn’t flag as potentially dangerous. CyberGhost will only alert you if you visit dangerous websites. CyberGhost won’t stop you from downloading malware on your computer. McAfee Total Security and Norton 360 are good options for internet security.

CyberGhost VPN’s Ad Blocker does not block ads as effectively as ProtonVPN NetShield, which blocked most of the ads I visited. CyberGhost’s Content Blocker still detects phishing websites.

CyberGhost VPN Privacy & Security

CyberGhost VPN follows a strict no logs policy. CyberGhost doesn’t store any information about your IP address or browsing history, nor files that you downloaded.

CyberGhost VPN collects standard information, like all VPNs. This includes your email address and payment details. This information is used only to send you updates and process payments. To send you updates and reset your password ).

CyberGhost’s website gives a short summary of their privacy policies, which I find more appealing than the full-length version. The full-length version of the policy is too long and complex. I prefer a shorter privacy policy (like TunnelBear).

CyberGhost VPN is located within Romania. It does not have data retention laws and is not part of the 5/9/14 Eyes Alliances, a grouping countries that share intelligence span>

CyberGhost VPN publishes a transparency report every 3 months that lists all requests it received from law enforcement and government agencies. It also lists the reasons why it refused to comply with all requests.

CyberGhost VPN Speed & Performance

My speed tests of CyberGhost VPN servers have been conducted. The majority of the servers were extremely fast for streaming, gaming, and general browsing.

My connection to the US server provided me with the fastest speeds. CyberGhost VPN provided excellent speeds when I connected from my location in the USA. It also allowed me to connect to remote countries such as Australia.

I ran a speed test while not being connected to CyberGhost VPN servers to establish a baseline internet connection.

Next, I connected with CyberGhost’s Quick Connect feature. My download speed dropped to 4%. This was an improvement over when I streamed videos or played online games.  I also made Skype calls.

After connecting to a server in England, my download speed decreased by around 45%. It was noticeable but I still was able to view YouTube videos in HD. All my videos started immediately and played seamlessly.

When I connected to a Sydney server, my connection speed dropped 23%. It was roughly the same speed as my connection to the UK. However, my ping did increase slightly. Even though it took a while for websites to load properly, streaming videos started playing almost immediately – even though I had selected 1440p from YouTube.

CyberGhost VPN is extremely fast. Even distant servers such as Australia can cause some lag. The VPN streamed video at 1080p, 720p and 1080p resolutions. It was amazing! Quick Connect allowed me to connect to a US server quickly. My connection was fast and there was no slowdown.

CyberGhost VPN has 7,400+ servers in 90+ countries. CyberGhost VPN has 7,400+ servers across 90+ countries. HMA has more servers than that. However, CyberGhost’s server network should ensure that there is a CyberGhost server near you.

CyberGhost VPN servers are mainly physical servers. This means the server is physically located in the country you are connecting to. CyberGhost has virtual servers in 29 countries. This allows you to have an Internet address in the country you are connecting from, but the server is located in another country. While I prefer physical servers over virtual servers, they are safer and more reliable. Virtual servers can be used.

CyberGhost offers dedicated servers for streaming and gaming. Gaming servers are more responsive because they have lower pings. CyberGhost VPN’s torrenting servers (in 65+ countries) are optimized for fast P2P downloads.

CyberGhost VPN uses shared IPs. This is a great thing as you can share the same IP address with hundreds (or even thousands) of other users. This will give you extra anonymity. CyberGhost VPN allows you to buy a unique IP address that is only yours.

CyberGhost VPN is a great VPN server network. Although CyberGhost VPN uses shared IPs to communicate with users, it also offers dedicated IP addresses.

CyberGhost VPN can be used to unblock streaming sites like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and BBC iPlayer. However, you must choose the right servers. CyberGhost has servers that are optimized to stream sites like:

Netflix prevented me from connecting to a regular CyberGhost US server even though I was located in the US. It was immediately unblocked using a Netflix-optimized CyberGhost server. It was easy to view full HD documentaries and shows.
