McAfee Antivirus vs. Trend Micro Antivirus

It comes down to how much you get for your subscription. Trend Micro and McAfee both offer antivirus solutions. McAfee is able to offer more functions and apps for almost the same prices. McAfee’s antivirus software packages come with both a VPN and Identity Theft Protection. Trend Micro doesn’t offer either. Trend Micro doesn’t sell separate VPN subscriptions, but it does offer identity theft protection plans.

McAfee’s main selling points are its vs. Trend Micro’s most important selling point is the sheer number of application- and function-specific protections included in its McAfeeTotal Security antivirus software packages. Here’s an example of Trend Micro and McAfee prices. The first is the first year introductory price. The second is the renewal cost.

Entry:

  • McAfee total protection single device: $24.99 per annum, sold in minimum 2-year subscriptions ($49.99 for two years, and $159.99 upon renewal each subsequent two year period); protects one device.
  • Trend Micro Antivirus+ security: ($29.95/$39.95); protects only one device (Windows only).

Mid-level:

  • McAfee Total Protection Individual & couples: $29.99/year. The minimum two-year contract ($59.99 in the first two year, $199.99 thereafter); five devices, Windows, macOS
  • Trend Micro Internet Security (39.95/$79.95); Three devices (Windows only)

Upper-level (Windows, MacOS, Android, iOS):

  • McAfee total protection family: $39.99 per annum, sold in minimum two years subscriptions ($59.99/$239.99 to a two-year membership), 10 devices
  • Trend Micro Maximum Security: ($39.95/$99.95), 10 devices
  • Trend Micro Premium Safety Suite: ($69.95/$129.95), Ten devices

McAfee bundles an password manager with all its Total Protection antivirus programs. Trend Micro’s Premium Security Suite package only has a VPN. The company’s two top plans offer a password administrator. McAfee packages offer safe web-browsing technology as well as 256-bit AES sensitive files encryption and McAfee Shredder. This deletes files in such an unrecoverable manner that they can’t be recovered. Trend Micro’s plans include parental controls, but McAfee has its “safe families” features in its Total Protection Family plan.

McAfee Total Protection Individual & Couples & Total Protection Family plans both include identity theft protections. This includes dark web and social-security number monitoring and alerts. A trained customer support representative is available to help you recover your identity 24 hours a day.

McAfee features more in every plan, and McAfee initial pricing is comparable to or lower than Trend Micro. Trend Micro antivirus renewal prices, however, are slightly less than McAfee. McAfee’s slightly higher price tag can be justified with its greater protections, such as its ID theft and VPN.

Summary

McAfee offers internet security products to small, medium, large and large companies. This includes 80% Fortune 100 businesses, 87% global banks, 54% of top 50 retailers, and 80% of Fortune 100 firms.

Pros

  • VPN included in all pricing tiers (with automatic renewal)
  • All versions support Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android
  • Virus Protection Pledge money-back malware removal guarantee with auto-renewal
  • Customer support

Cons

  • Deep initial discounts mean higher renewal prices

Trend Micro’s anti-virus software packages include Advanced AI Learning. It is a cloud-based technology that, according to the company, “delivers highly effective, proactive protection against ever changing malware infections…to guard against known as well-known and never-before encountered attacks”. This protects against viruses and spyware, phishing and ransomware. Trend Micro’s pricing plans include both Pay Guard financial protection for Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Windows PCs. Folder Shield also protects files that are stored on your computer and in cloud-synced locations such as Dropbox, Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive. Trend Micro, however, doesn’t include McAfee’s VPN or password manager. Trend Micro doesn’t offer identity theft protections. It does not offer webcam protection, file encryption or cloud storage.

Trend Micro’s renewal prices on three tiers (products) are less than McAfee. Trend Micro also offers significant discounts on 2-year subscriptions. This makes them even cheaper annually. However, the renewal price difference disappears when you add Trend micro’s VPN subscription ($29.95 per device or $59.95 per device). McAfee wins if there are cost differences between the antivirus vendors. Trend Micro’s separate password management program ($14.95/$24.95 for two years) is also available.
